Flughafen München GmbH

Integrated reports for european aviation hub

Flughafen München is one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs, recognized for its focus on passenger experience, infrastructure innovation, and sustainable airport development. Alongside its operational growth, the airport continuously invests in digitalization, mobility, and future-oriented transportation concepts.

Responsibilities

Concept Development, Art Direction and Visual Identity based on strategic positioning developed in collaboration with the agency’s strategy team.

  • Challenge

Since 2013, Flughafen München has published annual integrated reports combining financial, sustainability, and corporate communication into a single publication. The 2017 and 2018 reporting periods were shaped by record passenger growth, large-scale infrastructure expansion, increasing digitalization, and the growing importance of sustainability within the aviation industry. The challenge was to communicate these complex developments in a way that felt approachable, human-centered, and future-oriented – while maintaining the precision and credibility expected from corporate reporting.

For the 2017 report, the concept “Showing Class” focused on the people behind the airport’s success, highlighting employees whose work shaped the airport’s growth and operations during a record-breaking year.

The 2018 report, titled “Shaping the Future”, centered around the expansion of Terminal 1 and Munich Airport’s ambition to position itself as a forward-thinking leader within the mobility and transportation sector.

    Solution

The visual concept translated both themes into distinct editorial experiences.

For 2017, large-scale imagery, confident typography, and personal storytelling shifted the focus from infrastructure to the individuals driving the airport forward. Employee portraits and behind-the-scenes insights created a more human and approachable narrative within the structured world of corporate reporting.

The 2018 report introduced a more progressive and future-oriented visual language. Combining dynamic layouts, illustrations, and spacious compositions reflecting movement, innovation, and transformation. Infrastructure projects, sustainability initiatives, and digital technologies were visually integrated into a cohesive editorial system designed to make highly complex information easier to navigate and emotionally engaging.

Across both reports, the goal was to combine clarity, strategic storytelling, and visual precision — transforming reporting from purely informative documents into brand-building communication tools.

    Impact

The integrated reports strengthened Munich Airport’s positioning as both a premium international airport and a future-oriented mobility brand. By combining corporate transparency with a more emotional and design-driven narrative approach, the publications increased accessibility for a broader audience beyond traditional stakeholders and investors.

The reports successfully communicated Munich Airport’s transformation during a period of rapid growth and modernization while reinforcing trust, innovation, and long-term strategic vision. For this effort the 2018 report was awarded the LACP award.

    Learnings

Corporate reporting becomes significantly more impactful when it moves beyond data presentation and starts telling meaningful stories. Especially in highly technical and operational industries, human perspectives and clear editorial concepts help create emotional connection and accessibility.

Complexity does not need to feel complicated — with the right narrative structure and visual system, even dense corporate information can become engaging, understandable, and memorable.
